The Southern-style chain is getting ready for the holidays with a simplified, new menu featuring more comfort foods for these trying times. Cracker Barrel has also added beer and wine for patrons as their dining rooms reopen. In response to pandemic guidelines, the restaurant chain will be offering smaller, takeout Thanksgiving dinners to heat and serve, so that families can enjoy a pared-down version of the traditional feast.
According to Fox Business, the new Heat ‘n Serve Holiday Family Meal serves 4-6 people and includes a turkey breast and all the fixings. Cammie Spillyards-Schaefer, head of culinary innovation at Cracker Barrel, said that the larger, traditional meal that serves 8-10 people will still be available, but because many families will be celebrating solo, the smaller addition was developed to address their needs.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) issued guidance on Thanksgiving gatherings during the pandemic, suggesting that families and friends keep celebrations small this season to minimize the spread of COVID-19. According to Fox News, the CDC rated different levels of risk for holiday activities on its website.
“Thanksgiving is a time when many families travel long distances to celebrate together. Travel increases the chance of getting and spreading the virus that causes COVID-19,” said the CDC. “Staying home is the best way to protect yourself and others. If you must travel, be informed of the risks involved.”
Besides have a small family dinner, the agency says Americans can celebrate giving thanks by preparing and delivering cooked meals to family, friends, and neighbors who are at high-risk for the disease, making sure there is no contact with others.
