The U.S. military struck three Iranian crude oil tankers on September 5 after Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps fired ballistic missiles toward two U.S. Navy warships in regional waters.
CNN reported that U.S. Central Command said an American aircraft carrier and a guided-missile destroyer avoided the Iranian attacks, with no U.S. personnel injured. The military said two Iranian tankers were disabled near Kharg Island and Jask, while a third vessel was destroyed in the Gulf of Oman.
According to U.S. Central Command, the tankers were part of an oil network that helps finance the Revolutionary Guard and its regional partners. Iranian media had earlier reported that a tanker near Kharg Island was struck and that its crew was evacuated.
Kharg Island is a major center for Iranian crude exports, while the nearby Strait of Hormuz remains a critical route for global energy shipments. The latest exchange adds to renewed military tensions between Washington and Tehran and increases concerns about maritime security in the region.
